Horning – Wroxham, Salhouse and Ranworth

Set in and around the beautiful Horning countryside, this picturesque cycle takes you right past some of the region’s top attractions. From broads and marshes to family-friendly play areas, there’s something on this bike ride to suit everyone.

To help you get the most out of this fantastic route, we’re taking a look at the things you’ll be able to enjoy along the way.

Route
This route begins at Bewilderwood, a fantastic forest adventure area packed full of tree houses, woodland walks and magical structures. From Bewilderwood, turn left down St Peters Lane towards Hoveton Hall Gardens, then turn left again towards Hoveton village itself.

Pass through the village and cycle past Wroxham and Wroxham Broad. Turn left towards Salhouse and Woodforde’s Brewery and then keep left as you cycle towards Ranworth. You’ll cycle past Ranworth Staithe and the NWT Conservation Centre before turning right towards Town Green. From there, continue on to Hemblington and then turn right on Hemblington Hall Road and cycle to Blofield Heath.

Here, you’ll turn right and cycle along a short bridleway before coming out on Pedham Road. Cycle through Panxworth and continue on the Hulver Road before turning left onto Pit Road. This will bring you back out in Salhouse. From there you can either cycle back to Hoveton and Wroxham Station or you can retrace the route all the way to Bewilderwood.

Difficulty
Altogether, this route is 23.5 miles long. If you cycle at an average speed, it should take you around three to four hours to complete. However, if you’re feeling energetic, there are a number of extensions you can add to your bike ride.

The majority of the route is on the road, although there are short sections on paths and bridleways. There are very few hills to contend with in the Horning countryside, so you should be able to tackle the ride no matter what your fitness level.

Facilities
You’ll find toilets and parking at Bewilderwood and the nearby Hoveton Hall Gardens has a café. A little further on, you’ll find a pub and a choice of amenities in Hoveton and further facilities in Salhouse. Ranworth Staithe has an excellent choice of amenities including a pub, toilets, parking and an information centre. Nearby Town Green also has a pub and café.

A train station can be found in Hoveton, making the route easy to access by public transport.

Points of interest
If you’ve never been to Bewilderwood, this is the perfect opportunity to visit the magical attraction. A great day out for the all the family, it will help you and your kids reconnect with the natural world and have some fun. If you’re not travelling with kids, stop at Hoveton Hall Gardens instead. The gardens offer some beautiful lakeside and woodland walks and make a great afternoon pitstop.

At Salhouse Broad, Cockshoot Broad and Ranworth Staithe you can lock up your bikes and head off on foot. Spot the many local plants, birds and insects that live in the local area and enjoy seeing the Norfolk Broads from a different point of view.
